ชมรมนักศึกษาคาทอลิก เชียงใหม่ ได้จัดตั้งขึ้นมากว่า ๔๐ ปี แล้วที่สวนเจ็ดริน โดยพระสังฆราชประมุขสังฆมลฑลเชียงใหม่ได้เชิญให้คณะเยสุอิตมาทำงานกับนิสิต นักศึกษา เพื่อให้นิสิตนักศึกษาคาทอลิกที่ศึกษาอยู่ตามสถาบันระดับอุดมศึกษาในเขา จังหวัดเชียงใหม่และจังหวัดใกล้เคียง ได้มาพบปะแลกเปลี่ยนความคิด ความฝัน แลกเปลี่ยนถกเถียงและเสวนาในเรื่องความเชื่อ ความศรัทธาตามหลักคำสอนขององค์พระเยซูเจ้า
จุดประสงค์ของงานอภิบาลนิสิตนักศึกษาคาทอลิกในประเทศไทย เป็นไปเพื่อการพัฒนานักศึกษาคาทอลิก
1. เพื่อความเป็นหนึ่งเดียวกันของนักศึกษา
2. ฟื้นฟู เสริมสร้าง ความเข้าใจ ความเชื่อมั่นในตนเองและในศาสนาที่ถูกต้อง
3. สนับสนุน ส่งเสริม ให้นักศึกษาตระหนักถึงบทบาทหน้าที่ ความรับผิดชอบของตนต่อสังคม
4. ติดต่อ-ประสานงานกับองค์กรภายนอกที่มีวัตถุประสงค์คล้ายกัน โดยเป็นไปตามแนวทาง-จิตตารมณ์ของคาทอลิกที่ถูกต้อง
The Catholic University Students’ Group in Chiangmai(Thailand) was established more than 40 years ago, under the care of the Society of Jesus (Jesuit). It is based at the Seven Fountain Spirituality Center, where the staff include Fr. David Townsend SJ from Britain, and American Jesuit, Fr. John Shea SJ from New York Province. The current Chaplain to the Catholic University Students’ Group in Chiangmai is scholastic Manasan Wongvarn SJ and Fr. Viani Buelue SJ.
Student participation in the Catholic University Student’s Group is usually good, with 20 to 40 students taking part in events. Christians of all denominations together are only a tiny minority in Thailand. Our objective is to gather the students, to unite them, to help discover the depths of their Christian faith and to exercise their responsibility to wider Thai society.
Though it is a Catholic group, the emphasis is more on action (love manifests itself in deeds, as St. Ignatius of Loyola wrote), on what one can contribute to society, the love of God made real in our present world. the action emphasis also helps our students realise that there is a world outside the classroom that they have to deal with. The hope is that the students will be prepared to embrace their struggles, difficulties, joys and sorrows with love and compassion. By sharing with one another what they have, the students come to recognize that many people in this imperfect world still need our contribution. In so doing they discover that true happiness depends on what they can give, not on what they can get. What they give, however, does not help anybody very much humanly speaking; yet the little things they do are not wasted. It will reflect and re-echo in their life journey. The Group therefore emphasizes the spirit of giving in the light of Christian love and compassion. They will not only give but through this process of giving the students will also receive abundantly and learn a great deal of what life means.
During the year, we have several activities, starting with welcoming the newcomers and briefing them about all the possible activities. These include the Eucharistic celebration and prayers, the annual meeting in Bangkok with other Catholic students groups, days of recollection and sharing, and sports with other students and young people.
The cultural programmes consist of the Rice Celebration (in which villagers collect rice and gather it together for the poor who do not have enough rice to eat), and volunteer works in the village, such as building houses, water systems and Marian Grotto.
Students in the Catholic University Students’ Group take part in Children’s Day, the annual Thai holiday during which they arrange activities for the children in the remote mountain areas. They also visit Learning and Community Centres in Chiangmai, and they help high school students prepare for university and life away from family and village culture, by sharing their experiences and advising them.
